The British International Freight Association (BIFA) has welcomed the UK government’s decision to delay new import controls on goods from the EU and EFTA.

Announced after the UK-EU Summit in May 2025, this pause gives more time for talks on a Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement, which aims to make moving agri-food products easier.

What this means

  • Border checks delayed: Additional checks on EU and EFTA goods are postponed, giving freight and logistics businesses some breathing space.

  • SPS talks continue: Negotiations aim to simplify trade in food and drink products.

  • Temporary easements: Certain medium-risk goods, like fruits and vegetables, will continue under current rules to prevent disruptions.

Industry response

BIFA’s Director General, Steve Parker, said the approach provides “vital breathing space” for the industry. He stressed the importance of keeping trade flows open with the EU and encouraged the government to consult businesses before making future changes.

This decision helps logistics companies plan ahead and reduces uncertainty for businesses moving goods between the UK and Europe.
