The UK government has confirmed that from 25 February 2026, enforcement of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) will be stepped up.
This means visitors to the UK, including HGV drivers, who aren’t compliant with the scheme may be denied access to the UK. The government has stated that those without a valid ETA won’t be able to board their transport and won’t be permitted to travel.
If you have drivers or colleagues travelling into the UK, now’s the time to make sure everything is in place.

Who needs an ETA?
From 2 April 2025, EU citizens and other European nationals, including countries such as Switzerland and Iceland, have been required to obtain an ETA for short visits to the UK.
Short stays are defined as visits of up to six months for tourism, business, study or transit where travellers pass through UK border control.
Until now, Border Force has taken a phased approach, advising and encouraging travellers to apply. From 25 February 2026, full enforcement will apply.
How to apply
Drivers and visitors from non visa countries should check their eligibility and apply before travelling. Applications can be made online or via the official UK ETA app. Whether an ETA or a visa is required depends on the traveller’s nationality.
An ETA costs £16 and allows multiple journeys to the UK. Each stay can be up to six months, and the ETA remains valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
Most applications submitted through the UK ETA app are approved within minutes.
Plan ahead to avoid disruption
If your operations involve drivers or visitors entering the UK, it’s essential to review the new requirements now. Making sure the correct documentation is in place will help avoid delays, refused boarding or disruption to your supply chain.
